A live streaming starter in a dark midnight theme, built on Expo and your own Supabase. Browse who is live now in a tile grid with a pulsing LIVE pill and viewer count, watch with auto-scrolling chat and tappable floating reactions (heart, fire, star, laugh), follow creators in a Following feed with a recently-streamed shelf, and go live by picking a cover and setting a title and category. Theme it for gaming, talk shows, classes, shopping, or anything live.

What you can do

This is a starter for an app where people go live and watch each other broadcast in real time. You scroll a grid of everyone who is live right now, filter by category, and tap in to watch with live chat that auto-scrolls and tappable reactions (heart, fire, star, laugh) that float up the screen. You can follow creators, see their live and recently-streamed broadcasts, and go live yourself by picking a cover image and setting a title and category. It runs on your own Supabase project, so on first launch it shows a Connect screen explaining setup, then a sign-in screen, and only then the live grid. Note: a template cannot include the actual video pipeline, so the Watch screen uses each stream's cover image as the video placeholder; you wire a real player to the playback_url from a provider like Mux or LiveKit.

Data model

profiles
One row per auth user with username, display_name, avatar_url, bio, and denormalized follower_count and stream_count.
streams
Live and archived broadcasts with title, category, thumbnail_url, optional playback_url, viewer_count, reaction_total, started_at/ended_at, and a generated is_live column (ended_at is null).
chat_messages
Messages on a stream with a body and a kind of chat, tip, or system (clients may insert only chat; tip and system are server-owned).
reactions
Floating reaction taps tied to a stream and user, with a kind of heart, fire, star, or laugh.
follows
Follower-to-following pivot keyed on both ids that drives profiles.follower_count.
viewer_sessions
Per-viewer join and leave records (joined_at, left_at) that drive an accurate streams.viewer_count, with a unique index ensuring at most one open session per viewer.

Backend

RLS is enabled on all six tables: profiles, streams, chat_messages, reactions, and follows are world-readable with writes scoped to the owner via auth.uid(); viewer_sessions is private to each viewer (presence is not public).
Denormalized counters are kept in sync by trigger functions so the grid never aggregates at read time: bump_stream_count (profiles.stream_count), bump_reaction_total (streams.reaction_total), bump_follower_count (profiles.follower_count), and sync_viewer_count (streams.viewer_count, driven by open viewer sessions).
handle_new_user runs on auth.users insert to auto-provision a profile with a unique slugified username; all trigger functions are SECURITY DEFINER with a pinned search_path. There are no client-callable RPCs and no Edge Functions.
is_live is a stored generated column (ended_at is null), backed by partial indexes on streams for live-now and category browse.
streams, chat_messages, reactions, follows, and viewer_sessions are added to the supabase_realtime publication for live chat, reactions, and viewer-count updates.
A public Storage bucket named stream-covers holds cover images, with insert/update/delete policies that restrict each user to their own auth.uid()-prefixed folder.
The chat delete policy lets the stream host remove any message on their own stream for lightweight moderation.
